Previous geological and geophysical studies indicated
that the basement of Qaidam Basin, consists of
pre-Sinian tectonic fragments and Sinian–Paleozoic
fold belts, that is significantly different from that of
the adjacent Tarim Basin [4]. The geological section
from synthetic interpretation of MT (magnetotelluric
sounding) data (Fig. 2b) indicates that the middle and
lower crust in the northwest part of the basin experienced
strong shortening and thickening, with a structural
framework of contrasting vergence. The Altyn
Tagh Fault (ATF), located at the north edge of the
basin, may have accommodated different rates of
crustal deformation between the Tarim and Qaidam
basins [13].
