Oilfield services giant Weatherford and Italian energy company Eni are joining forces to develop a subsea drilling-with-casing (DwC) system. The system known as the SeaLance will reportedly further advances in subsalt plays and will be capable of working with any high-pressure wellhead housing on the market.

Weatherford’s DwC systems have been available for several years as a solution to drilling hazards that arise as reservoirs age, such as depleted zones with pressure transitions and hole stability problems. A DwC system removes the need to trip pipe and bottomhole assemblies, and additionally simplifies well architecture by potentially reducing the size of surface casings and liners. In some cases, it is possible to eliminate a casing string or liner altogether by successfully drilling into or through a pressure-transition or lost zone, according to Weatherford.

The result is a solution which speeds up the drilling process and reduces risk exposure by always having casing on or near the bottom.

The SeaLance system will be designed to enable a 20-in. casing string and its high-pressure wellhead housing to be drilled to a predetermined depth, cemented in place, and released in one trip?regardless of which wellhead housing is being employed on the project. The system will ultimately allow the remaining casing seats to be pushed deeper into the wellbore, and will further enable applications in subsalt plays.

Eni awarded Weatherford an Innovative Technology Agreement to develop the SeaLance. This technology agreement is reportedly aimed at realizing the benefits that a technology such as the DwC system can offer?including mitigating shallow hazards?in a previously nonapplicable and costly subsea environment. In doing so, this system will minimize risk while allowing maximum flow area to be maintained.
