A new drilling and well technology which aims to improve oil recovery from mature subsea fields was recently successfully tested in StatoilHydro’s Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea. The technology, known as “Through Tubing Rotary Drilling” (TTRD), and jointly developed by StatoilHydro and FMC Technologies, may help produce an extra USD 240 million worth of oil from the aging field, according to company estimates.

The TTRD technology replaces the expensive, conventional means of extracting more oil from fields, namely drilling more wells. Instead, TTRD enables the less expensive reuse of old wells by drilling new sidetracks through existing production tubing on subsea fields.

TTRD not only enables new drainage points and produces more oil from an existing well, but provides several additional advantages, including:

  • Safer operation - no additional tree required and less tubular handling
  • No pulling of the tubing or Xmas tree ? saves time and cost
  • Deeper kick-off point ? saves drilling and completion costs
  • Less handling of heavy equipment
  • Allows underbalanced and overbalanced work to be performed with same subsea equipment.

“The new concept will highly improve the efficiency of this type of operation in connection with subsea well operations, and enables us to produce oil that we would normally not have recovered,” said Oystein Arvid Håland, StatoilHydro’s head of subsurface technology. ”Now we see the result of 4?5 years of technology development in the company.”

The Norwegian oil company currently relies on subsea fields for 40% of its oil production, and all indications are that this trend will grow in future field developments. As a result, StatoilHydro will rely more heavily on technologies such as TTRD to meet the goal of improved oil recovery (IOR) from subsea wells.

The technology is currently applicable to water depths of 500 m, although the goal is to reach even deeper. “In the future we wish to utilize this technology in deep waters, for example in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Håland.

StatoilHydro used a conventional rig, the Stena Don, to deploy the TTRD technology at Åsgard, but Håland said that the results will be even better on a purpose-built rig. “In the autumn we plan to invite bids for a new type of rig to be tailored to such operations, and the aim is to get the new rig into place in 2012/2013,” he added.
